Photography Studio

I absolutely love trying new things when it comes to wall treatments, design, art. My friend Heather Booysen was opening her own photography studio and asked if I would do a mural/wall treatment on her studio wall. She is from Chicago and loved the whole industrial concrete look. Heather photographs dancers so she needed it to be textured but not distracting in the photos. We worked together, she chose the colors and I got to get my hands dirty! It was great!

This is what we started with. A perfectly beat up wall that just needed primer over it.

We grabbed two tones of neural colored paint, drywall mud, some tools, sponges, etc. I can't remember what colors we used! I will have to go back and look if people are interested. Sometimes the client purchases the paint and supplies keeps it and sometimes I wrap it in the cost and contract for the mural and I take the extra home. I will usually leave them with a sample of it for small touch ups. If there needs to be any other touch ups down the road there is usually an added fee to come back out to fix it.

Nothing makes me more excited than a new project!

I started by mixing some of the darkest paint in with the drywall mud. The fun part was not having to be super smooth with it. The goal was to be rough, random, worn. There is so much more freedom there.

Heather took some great shots of the process while I worked.

Always, always clean your tools!

After I troweled on the first layer I took and old synthetic bristled brush and applied the lighter color while the first layer was still wet. This way I could blend the two together and add more texture. I still left some of the original primed wall exposed as well to give it more depth.

I stepped back to look at the wall and as usual, I have different shapes that appear in my work. What do you see?

Heather wanted to put a faux brick on the small wall to the right. The product she ordered turned PURPLE next to the textured wall so I guided her through toning it down with the paint from the project. I'll show the reveal at the end!

Since we did the brick wall the other little wall looked pretty bare. So she asked me to add this wall to the project. It made the room look so much better.  The space was divided by a small partition wall that separated the large space into two sections but was still an open concept room.

Let's take a moment to enjoy the details of the texture! I know I said in another blog I hate textured walls but texture for the sake of builders being lazy is totally different than intentional texture like this. While she is only renting this space the owner was consulted and even stopped by as I was working and gave his stamp of approval, even saying it was staying for the next renters.

Now for the reveal! This project only tool a couple of days to finish and was a fun job! Next, I want to try my hand at venetian plaster!

It is such a great space! And you can rent the space out as well!
