Tropical Paradise

Tropical Paradise

I didn't have any murals on my books at the time so I did one in my own house! I wanted to add more hot pink into my decor at home and this little wall in my own living room was the perfect spot! I loved how it turned out! I originally wanted a pink couch! the wall opposite this one is a deep teal color called Deep Sea Dive. It changes from teal to almost navy when the lighting is right. The rest of the walls are still that builder grade Agreeable Gray. Boring.

As you can see, I love plants! They get great light along this wall but the wall was a little lacking. I wanted something fun but minimal still.

I had this Hint of Pink leftover from my daughters room so I used it for the background to brighten up the base wall.

This was the easy part. This next bit was where I started to remember how much I dislike textured walls for murals. ALL of our walls are textured. I have hated that since day 1 but here we are, six years later still with textured walls. I would have a few words with the builders if I could about some of the crappy work they did in here. But I digress.
I adapted and pressed on and just went for it. I took a photo of my wall then uploaded it into Canva. I then designed and overlayed the pattern to see where I wanted it on the wall. Here's one of the 3 am quiet work session while everyone else in the family was asleep. That's when I get my best work done! I just kept adjusting the image to where it needed to be and traced the pattern on the wall.

Next came COLOR!!!!! This gorgeous hot pink paint is called Exuberant Pink 6840 by Sherwin Williams and I'm absolutely in love with this color!
Since the design was so intricate and small I had to paint with the smallest brush which made the designs take so long for each one. I was up on the ladder where I might have slammed my head into the ceiling at least once. Upside down on the floor to get the angle right so I didn't get paint all over me or smear the design when still wet.

After many hours and late nights ending at 3 am it's done!

I am so tempted to continue it along the living room wall to the teal wall. Hmmm.......should I?

So to recap here are some things I learned in this process:

  1. Textured walls are going to take more time and cost more to paint!
  2. I probably should have skim coated or at least sanded before starting to reduce texture
  3. Projectors are an asset, not cheating
  4. Diva lights are great to have at 3 am
  5. I still work great until 3 am when it's quiet and everyone else is sleeping = HYPERFOUCUS!!
  6. Stop decorating for the next owners or just for resale! Do what YOU love!
  7. This took me way longer to do than I thought it would! It took 1.5 hours each leaf because of the texture!
  8. I love it and I would do it again!
